New F3 at Indidanapolis
« on: June 30, 2014, 08:32:59 pm »
All,

Here is another photo from the Indiana Historical Society of the some of the first diesel freight trains on the Indy branch from January 1947.   They put up a photo taken 4 days earlier at Monon a while ago.  Interesting that this was when the short-lived 92/93 ran from Indy to Monon and back.  Wish I was there.

Regards,

Mike

You are correct.
Trains 92 and 93 had two short lives
They ran twice first on CI&L eTTs 12,13 &14 effective 03/06/06 to 02/16/08
and CI&L eTTs 79 & 80 effective 03/02/47 to 08/17/47.

Neat photo, Mike!  Any chance you could post that earlier photo, too?

Tim,

See attached.  also interesting in the photo in Indy that it is the Engine with "MONON ROUTE" on the nose.  Was this the only engine with that?

Oh yeah, I remember it now.

I think #51 was the only unit with the long "MONON ROUTE" lozenge herald, Mike.  It was the first F3 set received by the Monon after all.  And never seen another.  Question is, did both #51 units have the full herald, or just this one?

Tim,

I just thought of where I've seen this before.  See page 78 of the Dolzall's book, also unit #51.  I guess there is no way to answer your question unless there is a builders photo out there?  I would put my money on both being the same.  I can't imagine them delivering the units at different times and if they were delivered at the same time, them having different paint.

I am surprised to see that they only had one unit on the Indy train.  Not that the tonnage would have called for it, I just haven't seen a Monon train in the 40's like that.

Regards,

Mike

Monon 51A &51B were delivered in 12/46 so I think it is safe to think that they were both painted alike.
