James G. Johnson

James G. Johnson passed away at 1:45am on December 28, 2014. James Johnson was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 25, 1934 to Cecil and Mabel Johnson who preceded him in death. James has five siblings, Cecil Johnson, Bill Johnson, Elaine McMurray and Dee Werner who all preceded him in death.

James Johnson attended Jefferson High School and went to the state finals in wrestling all four years. He won the state championship in 1953. He was inducted into the Indiana Wrestling Hall of Fame on February 18, 1990. He was also runner up for the Fourth Army Bantamweight class tournament in 1955; which made him eligible for the Pan American Games.

James was a member of the Masons and was given the Kentucky Colonel Award.

James retired from the Monon Railroad and then went on to become a Commercial Real Estate Developer. He is most noted for being the founder of the Blue Chips Riverboat Casino in Northwest Indiana. James served in commercial real estate for more than 40 years.

James is survived by his wife, Martha (Sammons) Johnson, three children: Janet (Johnson) Seale (husband, Mike), James Johnson (wife, Denise) and Tamara (Johnson) Hicks (husband, Steve). He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be held at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens Cemetery Chapel.

Jimmy was a really nice guy and I enjoyed working with him.  He was the last surviving engineer older than me on the Lafayette south seniority roster, a roster comprised of 110 enginemen when I marked up on it in June 1960.  RIP Jimmy, and all those who've gone before you.  / Ron
