From Gene Remaly

These pictures by Dex Jones @ M.P. 198 east of Peru and others @ MP 208 on the Miami-Cass County Line.  At MP 208 the prayer was "come on 765, wait rain storm".

The rain came to Logansport before 765 but had stopped by the time she came through Delphi.  We were at the McDonald's by the track in Delphi when the train went through.  The old guys in there couldn't believe what they heard and saw when NKP 765 whistled and came by.

The attached is from the service stop at Attica, Ind. between 1 and 2 PM.  There was a slow order at Lafayette Junction so we were able to get to Attica about the same time the the train arrived.  There are two NS Heritage units in the consist, Illinois Terminal 1072 and Wabash 1070.  1070 was dead, but 1072 was idleing.  Neither are used for power, just the 2-8-4 doing all the work.  The desiels are MUed to the steam locomotive so the engineer can control the desiels if necessary.

I've been told that the Norfolk Southern has a 40 mph limit on steam locomotives, but I don't think anyone has told the engineer.

The train will come back through Lafayette on Tuesday.

I talked to an exMRHTS member from Greencastle in Attica at the stop and I suggested that he renew his membership.  He has a Monon plate on the front of his truck and I was wearing my MONON t-shirt.

Correction to my last post:  On another board a message was posted that the steam locomotive was traveling at 40 mph.

Stew
If you choose Delphi on the return trip, I have had good luck across the track from the maintainers shack. The sun will be at your back until mid afternoon.
Both depots were located on the North side of tracks.

Great photos.  Thanks to everyone for postings.   I have one question:  In the photo that Stew posted showing "maintenance", I counted 12 men all wearing yellow reflector vests.  Were they all volunteers that rode the engine down from Woodburn?  I presume there is an engineer (NS employee?) inside the engine.

Sharon,

I've attached three photos I took in Ashville, Ohio at a service stop July 30th during NKP 765's move to Portsmouth, Ohio.  All these guys who are involved in the maintenance are volunteers from the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society.

The engineer is also from the FWRHS but a Norfolk Southern crewman who is qualified for that division is riding along.

In 1992 Ron was one of the CSX employees involved in their Santa Claus train on the Clinchfield when steam locomotive UP 3985 4-6-6-4 was renumbered for the trips as CRR 676.

Stew, I also spent four days running and riding this locomotive, renumbered as C&O 2765, when it ran the two NRHS excursion trips between Knoxville, Tn.  and Corbin, Ky. back in the 1990's.  It was a great thrill.  / Ron

Here's a link to a 1992 photo of UP 3985, alias CRR 676:
