Howard Fogg RS2 print

I did an internet search looking for a Howard Fogg Monon RS2 print.  I found a postcard at

but I haven't gotten a hit for a print.  There is a Howard Fogg Alco website at
http://foggprints.com/list_full.html
but the only Monon print is of C-628 #401.

Anyone know of availability of a full sized print of the RS2 as seen at

I've never acquired a print, but I would not part with the "fold-up" postcard set I got on E Bay for about $35 about 8-10 years ago.

Stew, there are several other Fogg prints depicting MONON RS2's.  One of an RS switching the PRR interchange at Limedale, another of an RS with a fanciful "Hoosier Belle" name on its yellow nose, to name a couple.  I think there's at least one more.

Tim, there was in fact an RS2 with Hoosier Belle on the nose.  It was just not up high on the nose where Howard Fogg depicted it.  We furnished copies of the photos, courtesy of Larry O'conner, for the Monon Room at French Lick.  / Ron

I know, Ron.  But the Hoosier Belle photo taken at French Lick showed it low on the front end and on black-and-gold paint.   Fogg's fanciful rendition showed it high up, above the headlight, and on the earlier black-and-yellow scheme.

But did you say photos (plural)  I've seen only one--with the Barrigers and son Stanley on the front platform.

The Fogg print, [not allowed]mas Eve in Mononland, with the F3 passenger train running below the church,  has always fascinated me.  Some have related it to St. Joe Catholic  church just a few miles n. of New Albany.  Does anyone have any detailed info on this?  About two years ago, St. Joe Road was revamped, removing several curves.  The print could be that area, but SR111 is missing.  It is a beautiful church though and may have influenced that particular print.

Tim, the pictures at French Lick were taken the day the Hoosier Belle service was inaugerated.  A bottle of champaign on the front drawbar [not allowed]ened it, and (I presume) a news photographer named Jacob Lofman shot several pictures of the event.  Closeups of the lettering showed it was probably applied specially for that occasion using double width black tape, and no doubt was removed soon after because as far as we know, no other photos of that engine with that lettering are known to exist.

One thing of interest, at the [not allowed]ianing John Barriger is holding a framed Howard Fogg print of the Hoosier Belle, so Fogg's painting was done before the actual Hoosier Belle officially came into being.

Tim, attached is the Railway Age article covering the Hoosier Belle event at French Lick. Besides the French Lick photos, I have also seen a photo of the engine with Hoosier Belle lettering at Indianapolis Union Station with a passenger special.

That's interesting Steve.  I wonder how soon after the French Lick event the engine went to Indy?

Here's the photo at Indianapolis. I do not know who took the photo or the date. The event at French Lick was on Feb. 15, 1947. The photos of #21 taken during the Centenial show the "Hoosier Bell" lettering removed so the window to take photos with the lettering present had to be quite narrow.

Steve, I had a very poor copy of that somewhere in my collection, but never knew it was taken at Indianapolis.  I just assumed it was taken at Lafayette.  Thanks for the information.  / Ron

Off topic but related: Did any of the early freight F's carry names as well or was "Hoosier Belle" the only named engine. I know the trains themselves had designations such as "Ben Hur" and "Lew Wallace."
