Here are a couple of photos taken from the new Salem Bypass bridge of the centerbeam cars at Fogg.

Is this east or west of Salem?

Bob, Fogg is TT south (east) of Salem.  I've attached a slightly modlfied portion of the profiles so you can see where it is.  Fogg was extended and is now longer than what shows on the profile.

Interesting...when I was through there 2 weeks ago, there were cars lined up on both tracks.

Ron, Thanks for the information.  I'm going to be over in Salem in a couple of weeks and might check out that location.

This morning (8) two engines went light south. They came back north (5) with a long string of centerbeam lumber cars and headed west out of Mitchell. My assumption is that they were the cars at Fogg.

Fogg siding was apparently lengthened in the very early 1960s to its current length...according to my grandfather, when the passing track at Leipsic was taken up (leaving only the spur used for fertilizer and farm equipment deliveries) the 4000 or so feet of rail were hauled down to Fogg and used to extend it.

A bit of digging through time cards of that period should nail it down to within a year or less.

And for those interested, Stores has the last 18 Employee Timetables available on 2 CD's, beginning with 9-28-52 and running through the end of the Monon on 8/1/71.  / Ron

I just checked the timetables.  TT #14 effective 10-28-62 still showed Fogg siding to be 76 C/L long.  TT #15 effective 11-24-63, showed Fogg siding to be 180 C/L long.  That would indicate that it was lengthened between 1-28-62 and 11-24-63.  / Ron

PS, attached is General Order #1424, TT #14, which covers the lengthening of Fogg siding at the south end.  As information, timetable changes which occurred between timetable printings were covered with General Orders which we stuck in the blank pages provided for that purpose at the backs of the timetables.

A train of centerbeam cars came north to Mitchell then west on the B&O last week. I assume they were the ones at Fogg siding.

Ron:

Thanks for looking that up in the ETT collection! My grandfather was not a railroader, but lived all his life right on the Monon at Leipsic. His memory of such details was always pretty good.

Now, if we could just figure out what happened to the contract between my great-great-great-grandfather, Jacob Johnson, and the NA&S, for the grading of one mile of roadbed north out of Saltillo...Grandpa loaned it to John Barriger for the 1947 centennial, and it disappeared into some archive somewhere. I've checked with the Barriger collection in St. Louis and they say they don't have it; I have not looked anywhere else recently.

Tom,

Ceciil, myself and my son Michael were at the Salem Depot as the light engines went TT south. They returned later with 90 cars headed north.  I believe Cecil has a picture of them passing near the depot that day.
